Rolex Explorer går tillbaka till 1953, då Rolex sponsrade den brittiska Everestexpeditionen och sedan formellt lanserade referens 6350 samma år. Explorer II följde 1971 med en fast 24-timmarsbezel och en oberoende 24-timmarsvisare, avsedd att hjälpa grottutforskare att skilja dag från natt. Boetten mätte 39 mm från 2010 till 2021, en modell på 36 mm återkom 2021, och sedan 2023 erbjuds Explorer i 36 mm och 40 mm.
